Funky House Set - Something They Feel by DJ Nameless

Who exactly is this DJ Nameless guy? Hailing from Vancouver he jumps out with a funky house debut on thefreshpage with Something They Feel. And feel it we do, starting off with that old school house kinda sound the funky bassline kicks in with DJ Ali's Will You Wait. And things get down and dirtier with Josh the Funky 1's Universal Sound and Kid Creme's Doing My Own Thing. Now if these don't have you shaking your boo-ty then clear your ears out and put on those sneakers as the following tracks will keep ya groovin on the dancefloor. Short and sweet set, DJ Nameless gets it with the final track Better Love by Thick Lips.

So You Think You Can Dance - Top 18

Last week Ricky and Ashlee were eliminated, so now it’s down to 18 dancers.

This night was an interesting one as most were put into a style out of their element. Like we mentioned we're only going to post the highlights from now on. We're trying to find some video clips, so stay tuned as this blog item will be updated shortly.

Our favorites for this night were actually the first two couples:

Lauren and Neil doing some hip-hop taught by Dave Scott. Neil rocks it and Lauren looks damn hot, but we do wish Lauren pushed it up one level and really emphasized the moves further. Like judge Mia Michael says, Lauren has more potential and needs to wow us more.

So You Think You Can Dance

Jessi and Pasha doing experimental jazz with Tyce Diorio for a choreographer. Jessi looks damn hot and this girl can move. Pasha surprised us doing this african style, he really nailed the movements!

Others worth noting:

Sabra and Dominic - watch out for these two, if they can keep improving and pushing it up a notch they can be a couple to watch out for.

Lacey and Kameron - the sexiest couple could get the most votes! Want to see more from them though...this jazz routine wasn't our favorite.

So You Think You Can Dance Top 20 Review

Wednesday June 13th - Top 20

So here we go with the top 20 strutting their stuff for 2 hours. British host Kat Dealey starts the show which is a bit rough to start as it’s obvious that they are nervous being on the stage in front of national tv for the first time. But this is it, and the prize is substantial at $250,000! Frankly we’re surprised some hip-hop artist hasn’t teamed up with the show to make the other part of the prize be a backup dancer in one of their videos. Can you imagine the free publicity they would get? Ciara? Are you out there? Nevertheless, this is going to be our most in depth review to give you guys background on the dancers. The following dance review blog entries will only mention the highlights and include a clip or two. Who has time to read more these days?!

Judges
Dan Karaty: hip hop choreographer
Mary Murphey: ballroom specialist
Nigel Lythgoe: executive producer

The way it works tonight is that the top 20 are put into couples and dance to win America’s vote. Thursday night the bottom 3 couples do their solos and one guy and one girl are dismissed by the judges. This is it, no more practicing and perfecting your own style, from here on end they will be molded by the top choreographers in the world and only one will shine at the end surpassing this intense pressure. Can you imagine that pressure? That’s what makes this show so damn exciting.

1st couple:
Jamie - contemporary dancer.
Hok – Hip-hop, bboy.
Choreographer - This is a hip hop routine by Shane Sparks
Song - Eva (tambourine).
Our opinion: A lot of choreography here, but it doesn’t really strike a chord with us.
Judges opinion: Dan gives good praise as does Mary but she knocks Jamie. Nigel does praise Jamie and we think she deserves it as it’s not her style and she did stand out.

2nd couple
Anya – 25year old ballroom dancer.
Danny – 20 year old adopted brother of Travis, contemporary dancer
Choreographer - Tony Meredith choreographer doing Jive routine
Song - Girlfriend by Avril Lavigne.
Our opinion - this looks like some weird ballroom routine…didn’t really like it.
Judges - they give serious praise to their dancing, saying they made it look easy.

3rd couple
Lacey – little sister of last year’s winner Benji. Ballroom dancer.
Kameron – freestyle dancer (hip/hop, contemporary)
Choreographer - Mia Michaels doing intense contemporary routine
Song - Dancing by Elisa.
Our opinion – very powerful, this routine kicks ass from the moment it starts. Complicated and brilliant!
Judges – Dan & Nigel knock Cameron but Mary mentions hair raising experience.

4th Couple
Sabra – 19year old contemporary dancer
Dominic – 21 year old break dancer
Choreographer – Doriana doing disco routine.
Song – Donna Summer’s No More Tears
Our opinion – very technical dance which is pretty demanding but they did it well.
Judges – Dan knocks it a bit but Nigel and Mary give quite a bit of praise especially for Dominic who has never danced with a partner before.

5th Couple
Ashlee – 19 year old contemporary dancer
Ricky – 25 year old contemporary dancer
Choreographer – Alex Desolow doing Argentine tango Routine
Song – Trio Fredrico’s Sentimento
Our opinion – decent dancing, and even no real connection between them, they are captivating. Ashley may be a bit too tall though.
Judges – mention no connection between them and Nigel also points out her long legs.

6th Couple
Sarah – 22year old hip hop dancer
Jesus – 23 year old contemporary dancer
Choreographer – Wade Robson doing free style routine
Song – The Triplets of Belville - Cabaret Hoover
Our opinion – extremely unique choreography but not always on time. Very challenging, pretty impressive and it worked overall.
Judges opinion – they loved it and pointed out the cool choreography and quick music.

Standout routine due to the amazing choreography, music and dancers

7th Couple
Jessi – 24year old hip-hop/contemporary dancer
Pasha – 27 year old Russian ballroom dancer
Choreographer – Tony Meredith doing smooth waltz routine
Song – Norah Jone’s Come Away With me
Our Opinion – Jessi is one beautiful girl and she stands out. Pacha just doesn’t do it for us, but maybe it’s his ballroom style.
Judge’s Opinion – They loved it and praised the technicality of them.

8th Couple
Faina – 21 year old Russian ballroom dancer
Cedric – 22 year old hip hop dancer
Choreographer – Shane Sparks doing hip-hop routine
Song – Lloyd’s Get It Shawty
Our Opinion – Cedric rocks it, but Phaena can’t pull it off at all, at least she looks hot though.
Judge’s Opinion – mention no chemistry between two and Cedric’s incredible fluidity.

9th Couple
Lauren – 18 year old contemporary dancer
Neil - 19 year old contemporary dancer
Choreographer – Alex doing salsa routine
Song – Mazerati 5’s Friday Night Rhythm
Our Opinion – granted difficult choreography and not their style, the moves were just not popping.
Judge’s Opinion – No chemistry between them and movements were not meshing together.

10th Couple
Shauna – 18 year old contemporary/ballet dancer
Jimmy – 20 year old contemporary dancer
Choreographer – Tyce doing Broadway routine
Song – The Wiz – Ease on Down the Road
Our Opinion – terrible song and choreography. Looked like they didn’t practice enough, just didn’t work.
Judge’s Opinion – Dan and Marry praise it but Nigel thinks they didn’t do it justice either.

Standout routines of the night include: Sarah & Jesus as well as Lacey & Kameron. Enjoy the video clips below.

Electro House - TheFreshpage Sessions Volume 3 by Nima

Nima - TheFreshpage Sessions Volume 3

Nima is one DJ who knows how to spin a set so finely that the diversity in his track selection sets him apart from any other DJ. So we asked him to develop the next episode of our TheFreshpage Sesions. He almost has you thinking this is going to be a dub set with the first track Control The Universe, however Nima masterfully layers it into funky basslines of A Bit Sketchy by BSOD. We're sure you won't find mixing of this nature in any other set on our site as the layers flow so well together that the only thing you are paying attention to is the incoming electro synths.

Nima then takes any dance floor down with some of the hottest tracks bumping you at clubs with MTV and the Dirty South Mix of Sorry by Kaskade. It doesn't end there as electro groodness jumps out through your stereo's speakers with the lavish sounds of Lolercoaster and Reconstruction. The latter half takes on a more tech house style with fluctuating rhythms and culminating with the warm and haunting sounds of Rapture. This is how we like it, with The Freshpage Sessions Volume 3 by Nima you have no idea what to expect next.

Deep House Set - Piperrox the House by Piperrox

Piperrox the House is a set with tracks produced by Piperrox including some vocals mixed in by other artists. But here is the kicker...Piperrox is a an 18 year old female from the UK! How does that make you feel about your level of aspirations? Simply put this girl is a musical genius! She is easly able to connect to you with musical notes that provide some kind of harmonious blend of beas. Yes this set isn't mixed like most DJ's on our site, but don't forget that she has produced them. We'd like to follow her through the years to see how she interacts with other talents in the electronic music industry since she clearly demonstrates in This is Who We Are with Cevin Fisher's vocals that she can create awesome tracks when collaborating.

So You Think You Can Dance Vegas Round

June 6&7 is the "Dance for your life" stage in Vegas where over 200 dancers are cut to only 20 people. These two hours were pretty intense with the editors whipping through the dancers and making it hard to make notes on everyone without having to watch and pause the show every few minutes. We are just going to mention the highlights and will do a more thorough review next week as we finally get to see the final 20 in an organized manner.

First hour shows hip hop choreography by Shane Sparks or a contemporary routine by Mia Michaels to big groups of people...basically everyone had to learn the routine within an hour and then do the choreography back in groups of 4-5 in front of the judges. Loved Mia's comment on "Don't be such a needy dancer!" Some people just need to be put in their place, this is a competition not a rehearsal! The weak ones were eliminated instantly. The ones that were put through were then given a CD with 5 songs and had to choreograph their group of 5 people with one song of their choice over night. A lot of frustration and tension as different styles clashed. Some really pulled through though! Best quote of the night "This is such an emotional process. I don't think people realize this (dance) is our life!"

At this point, the judges went through these groups and eliminated, gave them one more chance for a solo or put them in a room to tell them at the end of the night if they made it in the top 20. The judges mentioned several times that they would review all the tapes and not judge based solely on one performance.

These are your top 20 with our comments:

Anya: sexy Latin/ballroom dancer we saw in New York
Pasha: another russian boy doing ballroom style - man we can't handle this kind of dancing.
Cedric: Pop 'n locker
Ashlee: Contemporary/lyrical?
Danny: Contemporary/lyrical. Travis Wall's adoptive brother. This guy has a serious attitude problem so why did they put him through? Good tv we guess?
Jessi: baby-oil girl - bites the big one...why did they put her through
Jesus (aka Chuy): contemporary with some Latin flair
Jimmy: Contemporary/lyrical?
Lauren: Contemporary/lyrical? She's the one who worked with Tyce last year and this gril is brilliant and beautiful...she is going to make it far
Kameron: Contemporary/lyrical?
Sabra: Contemporary/lyrical?
Neil: Contemporary/lyrical?
Sara: The first B-girl on the show!
Shauna: Contemporary/lyrical?
Ricky: This contemporary dancer will definitely make for good TV, but he needs some make up and teeth whitening!
Hok: boring, not dancing just breaking without all the acrobatics. Twitch was a way better dancer. This one was obvious because of last year's commotion that he didn't have a work visa in USA.
Lacey: last year Schwimmer's sister

Too bad they didn't put Janet through, even though she had one fake arm you couldn't tell one bit, she was incredible and would have made for very good tv.

So there it is, until next week where we get to reference some video clips!

Remember to check out the video clips from the last few episodes plus some sweet ones from last season in our Videos section of our web site.
